PENNYWISE, CAPTAIN SPAULDING, & TWISTY

Welcome to Prime Time B****! This is our very first blog post for our new business, 'Prime Time Bitch'. Some of you may be saying, "Whoa that's aggressive". And others might be like, "OMFG!! Freddy Krueger, Nightmare On Elm Street! Duhhh!!” What myself and my co-founders are here to do is all things horror. We love horror movies, and the nostalgia that it creates, so here we are, turning what we love into a business. But any who, this blog post isn't about us! It's about how to DIY clown costumes and makeup. As you can see in the picture above, that's me and my boyfriend and my best friend dressed as clowns in New Orleans this past Halloween! I (pictured left) was dressed as Pennywise the dancing clown from no other than "It"! Holden (pictured middle) was dressed as Captain Spaulding from the Rob Zombies movies; "House of 1,000 Corpses", and "Devil's Rejects". Reed (pictured right) was dressed as Twisty from “American Horror Story: Freak Show” (Season 4). Reed bought his Twisty costume and the mouth piece mask, so disregard that, but everything else was from scratch! So let’s break it down so you can scroll through all of this nonsense if you're only interested in one of the costumes. We’ll start with Pennywise!

P.S. I will not include any prices in this blog since prices fluctuate all the time! I will say I was able to put together mostly all of the costumes at a low-cost (not including Twisty’s costume)!

PENNYWISE

DISCLOSURE: I did not try to be a "Sexy Pennywise". This is not what I was going for. I wanted the look to be as scary as I could make it without dropping a ton of money. If you're into scary over sexy, I gotchu. Also, if you are a true Pennywise/Stephen King fan, I apologize for calling 'It' a he, but that's what I'm gonna do okay here we go...

The Costume

Dress: I looked around for forever when I was putting this outfit together and wasn't sure what look I wanted to go with since there are so many different variations and styles, so I finally decided to go with a white/cream dress. I wanted it to be flowy so that it wasn't tight for one, and I wanted the arms to have that flowy look like his sleeves have in the movie. So I looked on Amazon, and I'm sure there are plenty of options on there if what I bought isn't what you want.

Neck Piece: I then wanted to get his neck piece just right, so I went with a girl's size cream colored tutu. I went with girls sizes because it will be around your neck so you're going to want the opening to be smaller (not too small though please don't choke yourself thanks). So I found one on Amazon again in the color 'Ivory'.

Gloves: When I was looking for gloves I wanted them to be white and fingerless. I could not find any fingerless ones I liked, so I ordered a pair from Party City and cut each finger slip in half to make them fingerless. It actually worked out because it ends up looking a little rough around the edges since he is a killer clown and all.

Leggings/Stockings: I wanted to make the entire outfit a cream/white color or variations of both, so then I bought white, footless stockings/pantyhose (whatever you call them). I want to say I got these at Walmart, but if nothing else, Amazon has quite a few options at a good price. I will link the ones I just found on Amazon.

Shoes & Socks: So, for the shoes, I had boots already that I had bought at Target a couple of years prior. This is definitely a piece of the costume that you can improvise yourself so you're not spending a crazy amount of money, but I do suggest boots personally. Boots give it more of a clown look and they kind of just go with the outfit and make it look more rugged. I had brown ones and black ones, and I went with the brown ones because I thought they matched better. Any boots will do! And for the socks! I actually had socks I had bought at a local store that had Pennywise on them, so I just used them, but honestly any socks that come above your boots a couple of inches will do. Mine were a dark color.

PomPoms: As you can see in the picture, I have three red medium sized pom poms on the front of my dress. Unfortunately, I could not find a bag of pompoms with just red pompoms in it, so I had to buy a bag of multiple colors which were kinda pricey. I suggest looking online rather than going to your local craft store. I ran out of time, so those had to do. To put the pompoms on the dress, I had some safety pins lying around, but you can easily purchase them for next to nothing.

Ribbons: For the ribbons, I purchased two separate ones. The first I purchased for the "belt" if you will, that's tied around my waist. This was a cream colored, thick (in width), silky ribbon that I found at a craft store called Joannes by my house. I COULD NOT find what I wanted online at all, so for this, I had to turn to the craft store again which can be pricey. It looked something like the picture I posted below. The second ribbon was a very thin red ribbon with some frilly design around the edges that I used to tie around the first belt to add some character to the outfit, and around each of my wrists so I had ribbon hanging down a couple of inches off of my wrists. I found this in the craft store while I was in search of my original ribbon. The red ribbon is probably something you can find more easily online or in any store that carries craft supplies.

Last but not least…

The Props: For my main prop, I used a red balloon on a balloon stick. Pretty simple, and the balloon stick helps hold the balloon up straight the whole time so it doesn’t continuously fall all night. I bought both the pack of red balloons, and the balloon sticks at party city. They were definitely the cheapest there.  The balloon sticks came in a pack of 16, and the balloons came in a pack of 15. I got extra in case they popped or blew away or in case the kid that came to the sewer that night took it… (JUST KIDDING RELAX).

CAPTAIN SPAULDING

The costume

So for Captain Spaulding, the costume was a lot easier…

The Shirt & Pants: Holden used an old white t-shirt he had that he didn’t care about anymore (even though the blood washed right out and he was able to use it again). We flipped the shirt inside out and thought this actually worked really well for the character. Holden also wore brownish Levi jeans he already had, but honestly any jeans you have will work!

The Suspenders & Bowtie: We found the suspenders at Party City, and as you can see Holden has no bowtie on, but we meant to bring a red one that he already owned, but forgot it! Red bowties are easy to find for cheap at any Halloween or party store!

USA Suspenders

Pompoms: Same as Pennywise if you read above, but I will copy and paste in case you skipped over It! Unfortunately, I could not find a bag of pompoms with just blue pompoms in it, so I had to buy a bag of multiple colors which were kinda pricey. I suggest looking online rather than going to your local craft store. I ran out of time, so those had to do. To put the pompoms on the shirt, I had some safety pins lying around, but you can easily purchase them for next to nothing.

The Hat: We thought this hat added a nice touch to the costume since we couldn’t find the exact one in USA colors that Captain Spaulding actually wears. These were VERY cheap, and we got two in case one broke but it never did!

Mini Red Cowboy Hat

Bald Cap: The bald cap was a struggle, I can’t even lie. We found the white bald cap at Party City which we assumed would be easier since we were going to make his face all white too, but it did not stick on like we wanted to! We had to buy some cap glue and remover that was sold separately. I will link all of it below! Just a tip… we slicked back Holden’s hair with hair gel before applying the cap!

White Bald Cap

Spirit Gum Adhesive

Duo Pack Spirit Gum Adhesive & Remover  This was not an option when I was in the store, but a much better deal. I highly recommend getting the remover!

Shoes: Holden already had his work boots (that you can’t really see in the picture) that he purchased from Walmart, but again, boots for a clown costume work best in my opinion (unless you’re Reed and think crocs are cool?? Idk).

Twisty

For Twisty, Reed bought the costume on his own so I will link that below!

Adult Twisty Costume Although it’s pricey to do this, the costume comes with everything you need! Maybe a DIY Twisty Costume blog coming soon?!?!

Shoes: Luckily they’re not pictured, but Reed is wearing Crocs with his clown outfit…….. Take this how you will.

THE CLOWN MAKEUP

Before I begin, here are three staple items I used for all of the clown makeup that were all low-cost.

Makeup Brush Link

Makeup Sponges

Pint of Fake Blood You’re gonna need lots and lots of blood! 1 pint was good for all three of us!

So here's the deal with the Pennywise makeup. I found a makeup tutorial on YouTube by Abby Roberts, and used that to copy her when doing my makeup. I will link her YouTube account below so that you can see her content. I personally liked how she did it the best out of everyone I saw, but there are tons of different makeup tutorials on Pennywise all over Instagram and YouTube! I did not use the makeup that Abby Roberts used in her video because it was a bit too pricey for me, but I found some solid alternatives that I thought did the job. What I will do, is list out what I used for all the clown makeup, and I will break it up by character just so you can have a better understanding!

I will link the items I used, and where I purchased below!

PENNYWISE FACE

Ben Nye Clown White Makeup  I found this at a local costume store, so that might be an option for you, but if not you can easily order it from a couple websites and this will last your for forever! I’ve been using the same 0.65 oz tube for 2 years and on a few different people. I also do not have the best skin, and I have never broken out, not even a little bit by using this.

Halloween Makeup Palette I am not going to link any specific makeup palettes because of course now that Halloween has passed, all the ones I bought are nonexistent online. I will show a photo below of what I am talking about. I found a Halloween makeup palette at Party City that had a light blue in it, as well as a red and a black. I needed the blue for Captain Spaulding, and the red and black for all of the clowns, so it saved me from buying two separate ones.

Makeup Palette Example (This is not the one I used, but just an example of what the one I purchased looked like… just something cheap like this).

PENNYWISE EYES

Red NYX Eyeshadow

Dark Purple NYX Eyeshadow

Black Eyeliner Pencil Again, this is something I am not going to link because I literally used a black eyeliner pencil from NYX that cost next to nothing. You can use any eyeliner you already own or run out to the store and grab something for very cheap!

PENNYWISE LIPS

NYX Red Lip Liner I also used this lip liner to outline the red lines going up Pennywises face as you can see Abby doing in her video.

NYX Red Lipstick Or any old red lipstick you have lying around!

PENNYWISE HAIR

For the hair, I went very basic and easy. When I pictured myself as Pennywise, I did not want to dye my hair orange or wear a wig. I simply went with the classic Miley buns and just used two hair bands that I already had! I already knew how to do this, but if you are unsure I am positive there are plenty of tutorials online!

Captain Spaulding Face

For the Captain Spaulding makeup, I did not follow any tutorial, I just found a picture of his face on Pinterest and freehanded

Ben Nye Clown White Makeup  I found this at a local costume store, so that might be an option for you, but if not you can easily order it from a couple websites and this will last your for forever! Captain Spaulding Eyes

NYX Black Eyeshadow I used this for his eyelids because as you can see it has to be very dark!

Black Eyeliner Pencil This is something I am not going to link because I literally used a black eyeliner pencil from NYX that cost next to nothing. You can use any eyeliner you already own or run out to the store and grab something for very cheap!

Halloween Makeup Palette I am not going to link any specific makeup palettes because of course now that Halloween has passed, all the ones I bought are nonexistent online. I needed the blue for Captain Spaulding, and the red and black for all of the clowns, so it saved me from buying two separate ones. The blue needs to be a light blue for Captain Spauldings eyes, and you are going to need to press hard and get lumps of the blue when applying so it will show up. I used the black in the palette for his little eye curls and his eyebrows, and I used the red for his cheeks.

Captain Spaulding Lips

For his lips, I used the black from the palette above because I did not buy black lipstick, but black lipstick would probably work better and I’m sure NYX has a cheap one that works well!

Twisty Face

Twisty’s makeup is extremely easy to explain. There are only a couple of items he needs since half of his face is covered up with the mask! Again, this was makeup I did freehanded based off of a picture I found of Twisty on Pinterest!

P.S. I used the black eyeliner (Below) for the wrinkles on his face as well!

NYX Black Eyeshadow I used this for his eyelids because as you can see it has to be very dark!

Lastly, dump loads and loads of blood all over everyone’s costume. You can use a paint brush, a makeup brush, a balloon stick (my personal favorite), and just go to town with slashing fake blood all over each other. It does get messy. I would suggest doing it in an area you don’t mind messing up. So, maybe not a balcony in a hotel room… idk just sayin’. Okay thanks for reading guys!!!

P.S. I am an Amazon associate. The items linked above to Amazon are affiliated links, so by clicking on those links, I earn from qualifying purchases, which allows me to keep doing what I love! So thank you guys for supporting me and my blogs! More to come :)
